As the owner and doula here at Summit Mama, it is my goal to make each woman feel empowered about her birth, no matter her situation or circumstance. My job is to provide emotional, physical, and informational support to the mother in labor as well as her partner. I visit with each family for at least (2) 1 hour sessions before the mother goes into labor, stay with the mother throughout the entire labor, and visit at least once for a postpartum visit.
During prenatal visits, I work with the family to make or go over the best birth plan for their circumstances, help them learn about all the topics they wish to learn about pregnancy through postpartum, and get to know them as a family so I can better serve their needs.
During labor, I use several methods of comfort to help the mother cope and stay comfortable which include; massage, reflexology, accupressure, hot/cold towels, relaxation techniques, positive affirmations, etc. I also make sure she and her partner have all the information about her care so they can make informed choices.
For postpartum visits, I provide 1-2 visits to make sure the family is adjusting well, help with breastfeeding if needed, and even help with dishes to help give the new mom a much needed break!
