Top dressing your lawn is simply adding compost on top of it. It’s actually good for the environment and cheaper and more effective than chemical fertilizer. If you are like most people in the south valley your sprinklers run every day and your lawn still has dry spots. Provided your sprinklers are actually hitting those dry areas, this will solve the problem. If you’re one of those people who is convinced “deep watering” doesn’t work, then your lawn needs to be top dressed. If you have chickens which eat your grass, you know you can’t eat their eggs if you use chemical fertilizers. This is 100% safe and healthy for them and grass eating chickens lay great tasting eggs.
If you have chemicals sprayed on your lawn monthly you know how expensive it is. This is hands down cheaper. It will replenish your soil and really does allow you to use less water. Treating 3500 Sq. Ft. of lawn will cost you $110. This is adding ¼ inch of compost to your lawn. Depending on how depleted your soil is you may need a second treatment in 2 or 3 months. After a couple of seasons of top dressing you may not even need to do anything to your lawn for a season or two. The whole time you will use less water.
