Utah Mountain Adventures (UMA) was founded in Salt Lake City in 1993 as a franchise of Exum Mountain Guides. For 15 years, UMA operated as Exum-Utah Mountain Adventures in the Wasatch Mountains outside of Salt Lake City.
Exum Mountain Guides, founded in 1932 by Glenn Exum, is the oldest and most prestigious guide service in the US. Utah Mountain Adventures shares Exum’s philosophy of “ excellence in guiding with a strong educational emphasis”.
In the fall of 2008, Exum Utah Mountain Adventures shortened its name to Utah Mountain Adventures. UMA continues to operate under a permit issued by the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, and has not changed its ownership, operations or guide staff.
As the landscape of American guiding has changed, so has UMA. Forest and national park land managers and other guide services are allowing qualified guides to lead clients in diverse areas. For example, UMA now offers climbs on Mt. Rainier.
Also, UMA guides have trained Utah climbers in the Wasatch and then led them on the Grand Teton, the Grand Traverse, Mt. Whitney, Denali, the Haute Route in the Alps, Mt. Elbrus, Island Peak, and even 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalaya
